Documentary background. Everything taught here is optimised for a scroll context where the alternative is one thumb-flick away. My viewers have already committed 90 minutes by sitting down.
I keep trying to apply hook logic and it makes the work worse — cheaper, more anxious. But I also can't pretend attention is free just because they pressed play.
Is there a version of this discipline for people whose problem is holding, not catching?
Yes — there's a whole literature on sustained versus selective attention and almost everything popular in creator circles is about the latter. Holding is a different problem: it's about narrative tension and cognitive load management, not salience. Your instinct that hook logic makes documentary work worse is correct, not a failure of nerve.
Adding a holding-attention module to Fundamentals off the back of this thread. It's a real gap and Anneke's right to call it out.
