Do visual hooks follow the same rules as verbal ones?

Motion designer here. Everything in the swipe file is language. When my hook is a 900ms animation with no words, does the same taxonomy apply — negation, contradiction, open loop — or is it a different system?

My instinct is that it's the same mechanisms in a different channel, but I've never seen it tested.
