Mechanism I think is doing the work: the sentence is internally contradictory. You don't fire your best. So there's a missing premise and the brain wants it. Costs nothing to wait 3 more seconds to find out.
Tried the same structure four more times since. 64%, 59%, 38%, 61%. The 38% was the one where the contradiction wasn't real — I'd manufactured it and I think people can smell that.
