The graph falls off a cliff between 0:03 and 0:05. Not a slow decay. A cliff. That shape almost always means one of three things:
Here it was the second one. Hook is a tight face shot, then a hard cut to a wide desk shot with completely different colour temperature. Feels like a different video. Brain files it as "this ended" and the thumb moves.
Fix was stupid: hold the face shot 1.2s longer and match-grade the wide. Same script, same edit otherwise. 0:05 retention went 40% → 63%. AVD went 41% → 58%.
The lesson isn't "don't cut wide." It's that a visual reset reads as an ending, and endings are permission to leave.
